About Sweeting’s Cay
Sweeting’s Cay is a charming little island that is home to a small rustic settlement. It is home to between 400-500 people who make their living from the sea, primarily selling lobster, fish and conch. Located some 55 miles east of the city of Freeport it is nestled in the Grand Bahama Cays and is accessible by a short boat ride. The residents of the island are very friendly and welcome visitors to experience their way of life, which gives an excellent insight into the more traditional culture of the Bahamian people.
The Setting: The Grand Bahama Cays
An Emerging Luxury Archipelagic Destination
Situated at the eastern end of the island of Grand Bahama the Grand Bahama Cay is a luxury destination and vision of the future that can be developed in a manner similar to the Maldives or French Polynesian island of Bora Bora. With boutique resort hotels occupying an entire or parts of these islands each with its own focus and feel embracing the wonderful surroundings.
The high end appeal of this area has already been identified and validated by the Deep Water Cay Resort Development. It has been very successful by focusing on the area’s natural beauty and world class fishing resources to build a high-end recreational fishing experience. In particular, they market the areas extensive fishing flats which are ideal for Bone Fishing, the resort’s close proximity to the Northwest Providence Channel, a major “drop off” for Deep Sea Sport Fishing, and with an abundance of surrounding reefs in the area there is Reef Fishing. What is interesting and yet untapped is that all of these features previously mentioned equally appeal to snorkelers and scuba divers which could easily make a Sweeting’s Cay Resort and the Grand Bahama Cays a world class dive destination.
The Grand Bahama Cays are also strategically located in an area that gives you great accessibility to the city of Freeport and the rest of Grand Bahama and the Abacos. Freeport is the second largest city in the Bahamas, which can provide guests with fairly easy access to many amenities of the city yet the relative isolation and tranquility of an island such as Sweeting’s Cay.
